Srinagar:

A fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists has started near an army establishment in Jammu, two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the region. In the initial firing, a security officer was killed and four others were injured, officials said.

The encounter started when security forces launched an operation in the early hours of the Sunjwan Cantonment area of Jammu city. Police said they had information that terrorists were planning an attack in the city.

PM Modi is reaching Jammu on Sunday. The presence of terrorists near an important military installation in the city is a major security concern ahead of his first political visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the revocation of the former state’s special status in August 2019.

PM Modi will address a big rally which will be attended by thousands of panchayat members in Palli village.

Ahead of the Yatra, security has been put on high alert and round the clock patrolling is being done by security forces to prevent any terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

Official sources said the police had received information about the presence of at least two terrorists in Sunjwan.

As they launched an operation, they came under heavy fire. An assistant sub-inspector of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was killed and four others were injured in the initial firing. A fierce encounter is going on.

“After we received information that terrorists are hiding here and planning some action, we cordoned off the area during the night. In the morning there was firing on the cordon, in which a security forces personnel was martyred and Four others were injured.” Encounter is on,” Additional Director General of Police in Jammu Mukesh Singh said.

Sunjwan Army Cantonment was targeted by terrorists in February 2018 in which many people were killed.

Terrorist incidents have increased in the Kashmir Valley since the last one month. Four panchayat members were killed in the targeted attacks, and several migrant workers were injured.

Three terrorists, including a top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, were gunned down by security forces in Baramulla district yesterday. The operation, which started on Thursday morning, is still going on. Security forces suspect the presence of some more terrorists in the target area.
