JEE Main scam: How Russian hackers rigged engineering exams, CBI reveals

The CBI recently revealed that international hackers were involved in the national engineering entrance exam – JEE Main which was compromised last year. Exams determine the future of lakhs of students. Recently a Russian national was arrested for his role in compromising exams.

According to the CBI, hackers rigged the internet system during JEE-Main last year. Russian hacker Mikhail Shygin reportedly helped defraud 820 people – more than previously estimated.

The exam, which was taken by over 9 lakh students in September, is conducted only at designated centers using control-restricted computers.

According to the investigation, Mikhail Shygin broke into the system to allow students to “remote access” to their colleagues, who later answered questions on other computers. Simply put, “teachers” or “coaches” outside the centers had access to student PCs and could handle problem-solving.

The CBI claimed that Shargin was a skilled hacker who gained access to the Ilion software. The software is created by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

The CBI on Tuesday informed a Delhi court, which granted him two-day custody of the 25-year-old. So far 24 people have been taken into custody.

Last week, Shargin was detained after arriving from Kazakhstan. The CBI informed the court that it was not cooperating with the investigators. Shargin told the court that if the CBI wants to access his electronic devices, it should be in his presence. CBI asked the court to direct him to share his username and password.

As per the investigation so far, an examination center in Haryana’s Sonepat gave “remote access”. At first, 20 students were suspected of cheating, and as a result they were barred from taking the exam for the next three years.

The CBI launched an investigation, conducted searches at several places and seized laptops and other equipment. Mikhail Shygin was the result, and the net has since become wider. According to officials, several foreign nationals are involved in the fraud.
