Jennifer Lopez makes rom-com ‘Homecoming’ with ‘Marry Me’

Jennifer Lopez plays a familiar role in the new movie “Marry Me,” playing a pop superstar whose love life is scrutinized by millions.

Often snapped by photographers herself, the film stars Lopez as Kat Valdez, one half of a musical superstar couple with her partner Bastian.

The two plan to wed in front of a global audience, streaming their wedding to their fans, but shortly before, Kat learns that Bastian has been unfaithful and instead turns to the crowd, played by Owen Wilson. A stranger marries Charlie.

“It wasn’t a role where I had to research what it was like to be a famous recording artist… I understand what it’s all about already,” Lopez said during a virtual press conference.

“The hard part was … the idea of ​​showing what it’s really like to be inside my bedroom when something goes wrong and you end up with a heartbreak like this in front of the whole world and the media goes to town on you.”

Released in time for Valentine’s Day, the film is a rom-com “Homecoming” for Lopez, best known for films such as “Made in Manhattan”, “The Wedding Planner” and “The Back-up Plan”. .

“I, as a movie watcher, prefer romantic comedies. Those are some of my favorite movies of all time, whether it’s ‘When Harry Met Sally’ or ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ or whatever kind of movie that is,” Lopez said.

“All of those movies I kind of grew up on, and I love them so much. And so it’s like homecoming for me, because I haven’t done one in a few years.”

Colombian singer Maluma made his acting debut in the film, playing Bastián.

“We both love music. We both love to travel, (perform) and everything. So I felt quite connected,” he said of his character, though dismissing Bastian’s infidelity.

“I enjoyed … the experience of being in a film … Even making music was beautiful.”

“Marry Me” released in US and British cinemas on Friday.
