JERUSALEM: Police shot and killed a Palestinian attacker on Sunday after he stabbed an officer Jerusalemold town of israeli police said.
Police said in a statement that the attacker approached officers posted in the old city and stabbed one of them, leaving him with minor injuries. Officers opened fire and shot dead the man, who has been identified as a 19-year-old resident East Jerusalem, Israeli media reported that a second officer was also slightly injured in the shootout.
Police released a picture of a knife kept in a stone alley in the ancient old town, with blood splattered next to it.
Palestinians have carried out dozens of stabbings, shootings and car attacks targeting Israeli civilians and security personnel in recent years. Many of the attacks appear to have had no links to terrorist groups.
Palestinians and rights groups have accused Israel of using excessive force in an attempt to subdue the attackers.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, including the Old City and its Christian, Muslim and Jewish holy sites, as well as Western coast and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East War. It later included East Jerusalem in a move that was not recognized by most of the international community.
The Palestinians sought the occupied West Bank and Gaza for a future independent state as the capital of East Jerusalem.
