Koderma : District Administration koderma has announced that 50 of its nearly 300 villages have achieved 100% literacy rate, a milestone among the first few districts in the country to achieve the feat.
What is Koderma a part of? North Chotanagpur bifurcated and came into existence as a separate district in 1999. The district consists of six blocks with 110 gram panchayats, each consisting of one to three villages. The present average literacy rate of the district is 66.84% (79.78% male and 53% female).
Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan He said that this achievement is the result of the collective efforts of the district officials and villagers. “The journey of change was not easy, but the villagers in these areas decided to change things on their own,” he insisted.
He said that Koderma has become one of the first districts in the north and east of the country where 50 villages are fully literate “where everyone can read and write their name”.
“In these 50 villages, people today can read and recognize letters. Now no one prints a thumb impression. Those who are now literate are in the age group of 12 to 85 years and can write their own names. One self -The declaration form was given to each of them, which was filled out by all the residents of 50 villages before tagging them as literate villages.Earlier, about 40% of the people in these villages could not identify the letters, DC said.
Ranjan said that he realized that there is an eagerness to do something remarkable among the villagers and they want to change their situation during their journey in the rural parts of the district.
“This enthusiasm acted as a catalyst and the administration decided to pave the way for development through their participation to make the villages self-reliant. I along with my team visited the villages regularly and encouraged the residents to take their Ready to discuss the problems and come up with the solutions they wanted,” he said.
The DC further said, “The yatra started from Phulwaria village on January 24, 2022. It took almost eight months to motivate villagers of diverse mindsets to discuss common goals in a systematic manner. We organized ‘Gram Sabhas’ and Organized ‘Ratri Choupal’ which acts as a platform for learning.”
Ranjan was one of the key motivators of the ‘Ratri Choupal’ and identified the ‘Lok Preraks’, ‘Bhaiyya’ and ‘Didi’ of various villages as essential points of contact between the villagers and the district administration.
“In a later phase, the concept of ‘shramdan’ was adopted by the villagers. People volunteered to help clean up the villages and they also worked to conserve water by digging holes in the area so that ponds and check dams were built The administration took up plantation on a large scale for plantation. After the successful implementation of the initial goal of self-reliance, the administration directed its efforts to achieve complete literacy in the villages.
He also said, “Residents with a strong desire for literacy and the motivation to teach their fellow villagers were identified and education centers were set up within the existing infrastructure. The centers were filled with a good number of villagers of all ages, including women. classes for regular writing, the practice of writing on slates and notebooks continued for about eight months, eventually leading to 100% literacy in 50 villages.”
Highlighting that Koderma has become one of the first districts in the country to have 50 villages with 100% literacy rate, Ranjan said, “Efforts will continue and 200 villages will achieve 100% literacy rate by January 26, 2023. There is no plan and lack of institutional framework was a hindrance in the journey ahead, but the hunger of people to learn and write will make it possible.”
