Jharkhand: CM Hemant Soren confident of winning floor test today

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren will seek a trust vote on September 5 during a one-day special session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly amid political unrest in the state. The meeting was scheduled after the Jharkhand cabinet recently approved a proposal to hold a special session of the assembly. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) MLAs, who were staying at the resort in Raipur to attend this special session, flew back to Ranchi on 4 September.

The ruling coalition is ready to deal with any eventuality, Soren had earlier assured the media at the Ranchi airport. “No force majeure is going to happen. We are ready for everything, the situation is under control. I will let you know if I will accompany the MLAs,” he said.

According to government sources, the ruling coalition will take a confidence motion on Soren and present it in the House.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel denied claims that he was sheltering UPA MLAs from Jharkhand in his state and working to keep the Jharkhand administration in power. When asked about the Jharkhand UPA MLAs in Raipur, Baghel said, “Who are I to save someone (Jharkhand government)? … They are guests in my state.”

CM Baghel had earlier said that the UPA coalition government in Jharkhand shifted its MLAs to Raipur to prevent them from being snatched away in light of the BJP’s “horse-trading” strategies.

Notably, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its allies shifted their MLAs to a resort in the Congress-ruled state of Chhattisgarh last week due to poaching concerns. According to ANI sources, 13 members of Congress were among those who traveled to Raipur, including four ministers and 18 JMM MLAs. Shortly after coming back from Raipur, CM Soren received the MLAs at the Circuit House.

The MLAs will spend the night at the Circuit House and will leave at 10 am for the one-day session in the Jharkhand Assembly.

A political crisis erupted in Jharkhand when the BJP petitioned for Soren’s expulsion from the assembly, claiming that he had taken advantage of his post. The ruling party of the Jharkhand coalition had around 31 MLAs and ministers in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, disqualifying Soren from serving as an MLA.

The BJP has sought the disqualification of Soren as an MLA, alleging that he had allotted himself a mining lease in 2021 during the state mining department.
