Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the abrogation of Article 370 and said the apex court’s decision proves the constitutional validity of the legislature.

Soon after the Supreme Court verdict, Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a visionary decision five years ago that brought peace and normalcy to Jammu and Kashmir.

Shah also spoke on the J&K Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and J&K Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha on Monday and said that it is not right to challenge the announcements of the Governor’s rule and President’s rule.

However, the opposition leaders staged a walk out of Rajya Sabha during Amit Shah’s reply on Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill.

Here are his top quotes from the Rajya Sabha speech today:

  • “The Supreme Court also accepted that it is not right to challenge the announcements of the Governor’s rule and President’s rule. When the temporary provision was made, the question arose that if it is temporary then how will it be removed? So a provision was inserted inside Article 373 that the President can amend Section 370, ban it and also take it completely out of the Constitution,” said Shah in Rajya Sabha.
  • “Today, the decision (by Supreme Court on Article 370) has also come. Still, they (Congress) say that they don’t accept this and that Article 370 was abrogated wrongfully. I can’t explain to them what is the reality…Article 370 boosted separatism and separatism led to the rise of terrorism,” Shah said.
  • One wrong decision can be taken but when history and time prove that the decision is wrong, one should come back towards the interest of the nation. I still say, come back otherwise there won’t remain even how many are left now (MPs elected to the House). If you want to stick to this decision even today, the public is watching – there will be face off in 2024 and PM Modi will become the PM for the third time,” he added.
  • “Today, the future of youth in J&K is not black but the blackboard of school has become their future. The youth who used to be involved in stone-pelting have been given laptops,” Shah said.
  • “Earlier there were 37 seats in Jammu, now after the new delimitation commission, there are 43 seats. Earlier there were 46 in Kashmir, now there are 47 and in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, 24 seats have been reserved since PoK is ours,” Shah on PoK.
  • “24 seats have been reserved in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. I am saying this again Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir is ours and no one can take it from us,” Shah said.
  • “SC accepted that Article 370 was a temporary provision. If Article 370 was so fair, so needful, then why would Nehru ji use the word temporary in front of it? Those who say that Article 370 is permanent are insulting the intention of the Constituent Assembly and the Constitution,” he said.
  • PM Modi, myself, the Cabinet and the BJP will not run away from owning responsibility for abrogating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir,” Shah said in Rajya Sabha.
  • “Have you seen any large gatherings at the funeral processions of terrorists after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir,” asked Amit Shah.
  • “32 terrorism finance cases have been registered by SIT and 51 terrorism finance cases were registered by SIG. 229 arrests have been made in terror finance cases. Properties worth Rs 150 crores have been seized and SIA has frozen 134 bank accounts with Rs 100 crores in them,” said Shah.

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370, which bestowed special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and said steps should be taken to conduct elections in the assembly by September 30 next year.

The apex court also directed that statehood to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir be restored at the earliest.
