JNPT’s cargo handling grew by 28.45% in August

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which handles more than half of India’s containerized cargo through its ports, saw a year-on-year growth of 28.45% in cargo handling in August.

This comes against the backdrop of India’s merchandise exports growing 45.17% year-on-year to $33.14 billion in August.

“Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of the major container handling ports, witnessed a spurt in cargo handling and recorded a throughput of 453,105 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) in August 2021, a growth of 28.45% as compared to 352,735. is growth. TEU in the same month last year. NSIGT (Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal) handled 98,473 TEUs in August-2021, which is the highest ever TEUs since its inception.”

This comes against the backdrop of an investment of Rs 8 trillion envisaged under Sagarmala by 2035. The Sagarmala program envisages construction of new ports to exploit the country’s 7,517 km coastline and established 142 cargo terminals at 12 major ports.

“The container traffic at JNPT during the first five months of the financial year 2011-22 was 2,250,943 TEUs as against 1,54,900 TEUs, which is 45.70% higher than the container traffic in the corresponding period of the previous year. The total traffic in JNPT during the first five months of FY 2021-22 was 30.45 million tonnes as against 21.68 million tonnes, which is an increase of 40.42%.
