Wright said that restoring accountability and confidence in good government is more important than apologizing, and that Johnson’s continuance in office would hamper important government objectives.
“Therefore I conclude with regret that for the good of this and future governments, the prime minister should resign,” he said.
More than 20 Conservative lawmakers have publicly called for Johnson to step down as news of parties breaking the lockdown continue to surface in the media. At least 54 are needed to formally request a vote of confidence in order to trigger one.
