Joshimath Ground Report: Future of students hangs in balance as CBSE board exams round the corner

Pallavi Panwar, a slender girl with short hair, is packing all the clothes and household items as her family plans to move out of Joshimath as their house has developed cracks. Panwar’s house has been marked as ‘unsafe’ as several cracks have appeared on the walls and floor. Panwar studies in class 10 at Kendriya Vidyalaya School in Sunil village of Joshimath. She has to appear for the CBSE board exams in February, but is scared about her career. Many of his friends have also moved out of Joshimath as their houses are also marked ‘unsafe’.

“I don’t get time to prepare anymore. For the last 10 days, we are only packing, sleeping on the streets, and worrying about our home. 50% of the stuff we have shifted to our relatives Huh” .

Resident Jagat Singh Joshimath, has been living in the holy city for 47 years. Singh said that Joshimath is the examination center for hundreds of students living in nearby villages. “Every year, students from neighboring villages come to Joshimath for board exams in February and March. Most of them stay in hotels, lodges or local people’s homes.” Since the state government has marked ‘unsafe’ over 700 buildings where these students will stay during the time of exams, questions Singh.

Bhagwat Pawar, who works in the hospitality industry, told Mint that his son has developed extreme emotional and psychological distress due to the current crisis. He said, “My son, who is in class 10th, is not able to concentrate on his studies. His studies have been affected to a great extent as chaos has spread in the town. I hope the government does something for the board students.” Will also take some initiative.

Pallavi Panwar said that there are about 7-8 schools in Joshimath area and some cracks have also come in her school KV.

Due to the severe cold, all the schools in the town are closed at this time. Some schools will reopen in late January while others will open on February 1st.

Junior Secretariat Assistant Officer Dharam Dev Yadav said that there are 558 members in Kendriya Vidyalaya Joshimath. Minor cracks have also developed in the entrance staircase and main corridor in the school, he added. He said, “The school has sent a message to all parents, asking them whether they will be transferred or not. We are still collecting the data of students moving out of Joshimath.”

On the upcoming CBSE board exams and its impact on Joshimath students, Yadav said, “The final decision will be taken by the CBSE board and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangh.”

Shashi, 30, whose house has also developed cracks, is worried about the future of her two children. “We have lived our entire lives in Joshimath, but I don’t know if my children will have the same fate. Right now, I have sent them to Dehradun as all the rooms on our ground floor have developed cracks.”

CBSE will conduct the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams from 15 February 2023.
