JP Nadda to sound poll bugle in Manipur during 2-day visit, meet core BJP group to plan strategy for 2022

BJP national president JP Nadda is all set to sound the election bugle in Manipur ahead of the assembly elections in the state next year. Nadda will be in Manipur on October 9 and 10 – his first visit to the state after taking over as party president. He will also be accompanied by BJP general secretary BL Santosh.

Manipur BJP in-charge Sambit Patra, election in-charge and Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, election co-in-charge Pratima Mandal and co-in-charge, Assam government minister Ashok Singhal and BJP general secretary Ajay Jamwal will also be present there.

During the two-day visit, Nadda will hold various organizational meetings with party functionaries and the BJP core group in the state. He will also inaugurate three district offices of the party, including the head office in the capital Imphal.

Since the Covid-19 protocols are still in place, the BJP wants to stay away from large public gatherings or rallies. Thus, the national president of the BJP will hold small gatherings of anywhere between 300 to 500 people, keeping social distancing in mind. A similar meeting will also be held with party workers. Sources told CNN-News18 that some meetings are also going to take place with prominent citizens of Manipur.

The saffron party is gearing up for the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections and has set a target of securing a two-thirds majority and 40 out of 60 seats in the polls. The BJP unit led by N Biren Singh is seeking its second term there.

Heading the NDA government, Biren Singh formed the government in Manipur on March 15, 2017 and took oath along with any minister. Later four new ministers were added to his cabinet.

In June 2020, the Biren Singh government suffered a major setback when nine MLAs, including ministers, withdrew support to the government, reducing it to a minority. Within a week, the intervention of the central leadership resulted in four NPP MLAs returning to the NDA, leading to the fall of the government.

Singh was successful in winning the trust vote, during which 8 out of 24 Congress MLAs defied the party whip and abstained from voting. Thereafter O Henry Singh and six others resigned from the Congress.

Currently, the BJP-led NDA is in majority in the Assembly with 36 out of 60 seats, including 20 with 4 BJP MLAs and four each from NPP and NDF, 1 from LJP and three independents.
