New Delhi: The Law Ministry on Wednesday notified the appointment of Justices. Uday Umesh Lalit as the next Chief Justice of India, as successor chief Magistrate NV Raman who steps down on 26 August after a 16-month stint as the head of the country’s Supreme Court.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Uday Umesh Lalit, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from August 27, 2022, The government notification read.
Justice Lalit is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after the incumbent CJI NV Ramana and as per convention, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the CJI.
Justice Lalit will be in his place when he demits office in November D Y ChandrachudIf practice is followed.
Soon after the government issued the notification for Justice Lalit, a statement issued from the apex court said: “CJI NV Ramana today congratulated Justice UU Lalit on being appointed as the 49th CJI. ,
