Australia’s next Test assignment will be a two-match home series against the West Indies starting in Perth in late November, which is likely to be the start of commentary from Langer.

Perth: Former Australian men’s coach Justin Langer will join Channel Seven’s commentary team for cricket’s upcoming home summer.

The 51-year-old wanted to continue coaching Australia’s men’s team for a longer period, but was only offered a six-month contract extension in February after straining relations with players and staff over the past 15 months.

Rather than accept a short-term extension, Langer decided to step down as national coach. Following his resignation, there was speculation whether he would take up a coaching role in England or with a team in the Big Bash League.

Ultimately, Langer’s move was announced on Friday after a widely expected announcement came after he withdrew from the opportunity to coach the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL, a report in ESPNcricinfo said.

Close friend Ricky Ponting – who is also a Channel Seven commentator – had previously selected Langer to coach the Hurricanes, after having himself been appointed as their head of strategy. But Ponting confirmed last week that Langer had decided against returning to coaching in the short term, and would now comment on the players he coached for four years.

Langer’s decision to join commentary is likely to have caused some intrigue as he remarked on the team that he walked into messy conditions earlier this year.

Australia’s next Test assignment will be a two-match home series against the West Indies starting in Perth in late November, which is likely to be the start of commentary from Langer.
