Kabir Khan reveals why Kapil’s devils haven’t seen 83 till now

One of the most awaited films of this year, 83 is all set to finally hit the screens on December 24. Starring Ranveer Singh as cricket legend Kapil Dev, Kabir Khan’s film focuses on India’s historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. A private screening of the sports drama was held in Mumbai and has already garnered rave reviews from some of the Bollywood celebrities.

Kabir Khan shares his journey of recreating one of the biggest cricketing moments the country has ever seen. Speaking to The Indian Express, he said, “It’s a labor of love that we have nurtured over the years. I can’t wait for everyone to finally see it alive on screen.” He asked many important questions, from the extensive casting process to the long wait for a theatrical release.

Kabir mentioned that the actors in the film had to physically resemble the cricketing legends they were supposed to portray. It took about 18-20 months to fix it. “Honestly, he had to pass the test on the pitch first and then the acting audition,” revealed the director. Interestingly, the original team members have not yet seen the film and have refused to watch any screenings.

“It’s an unbelievable thing and people don’t believe it, but they haven’t seen the film yet,” Kabir said. Kapil Dev wants to watch the film together as a team when it releases.

“It shows how secure he is about his stardom,” Kabir said. He said that he is happy with the trust reposed in him. He let them narrate their story and never interfered with their filmmaking.

During a five-week cricket-cum-casting workshop held in the West Indies, the team behind 83 got the sons of Malcolm Marshall and Gordon Greenidge to play their fathers on screen. Also, it was decided that Clive Lloyd’s son would play the role of fast bowling great Joel Garner.

Kabir also recalled meeting Kapil Dev and his wife Romi Bhatia a few years back. Speaking about the inclusion of Romi played by Deepika Padukone in the film, Kabir said that he felt Kapil’s life is incomplete without Romi’s presence. So, she decided to involve Romi in the conspiracy.

The film will re-live that unforgettable moment when the World Cup trophy is handed over to Kapil. Kabir reveals that the scene in the film has the original trophy, which was brought from the museum to the sets.

Since the release of the film got delayed several times, due to the pandemic, did OTT release ever have in his mind? Kabir said while the lockdown inspired moments of despair and desperation, he was always committed to a theatrical release as 83 is made for a big screen experience.
