New Delhi:

Student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Gujarat’s Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani are going to join Congress today.

Posters welcoming Kanhaiya Kumar to the party were put up outside the Congress office in Delhi this morning.

Kanhaiya Kumar joined the CPI or Communist Party of India just before the 2019 general election and contested against Giriraj Singh of the BJP from his hometown of Begusarai in Bihar. But he failed to win the election.

Former JNU Students’ Union president, Kanhaiya Kumar was jailed in 2016 for raising “anti-national slogans” at an event to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru.

MLA Jignesh Mevani, who represents the Vadgam constituency in Gujarat, is the key to the Congress’ electoral math ahead of elections in the state next year.

Mr. Mevani, a lawyer and former journalist, joined the Congress at a time when the party is reaching its traditional support base, the Scheduled Caste community; The party chose a Dalit chief minister in Punjab – Charanjit Singh Channi – to replace Amarinder Singh.

Mr. Mewai also tweeted his support: “The decision to appoint Charanjit Singh ji as CM of Punjab is a message that Rahul Gandhi and Congress have given. It will have a tremendous impact not only on Dalits but among all the subaltern masses For the downtrodden, the trick is not only spectacular but also soothing.”

Sources say that Kanhaiya Kumar has met Rahul Gandhi twice in two weeks. He has also met Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
