Kanhaiya Kumar joins Congress in presence of Rahul Gandhi; Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani gave support. India News – Times of India

New Delhi: Former leader of Communist Party of India (CPI) Kanhaiya Kumar joined on tuesday Congress in the presence of Rahul Gandhi at the party headquarters in the national capital.

An excited Congress said that Kanhaiya Kumar is a symbol of fighting for freedom of expression in the country. Senior leader and party general secretary KC Venugopal said, “Our workers will be excited by his joining the Congress.”
Kanhaiya said, ‘I am joining the Congress because I feel that if the country has to be saved, then the Congress has to be saved.’

Kanhaiya said, “The Congress party is like a big ship. If it survives, all other smaller parties will also survive.”
With Kanhaiya Kumar, the Congress will hope to improve its performance in Bihar, where it has been a minor player for some time now.

Kanhaiya, who rose to prominence as the president of the JNU Students’ Union, had joined the CPI ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Begusarai in Bihar against Giriraj Singh of the BJP and was unsuccessful.

Jignesh Mevani joined the ideology of Congress
Another young leader who came on Congress stage today was independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani.
“I am joining the ideology of Congress today. I have not formally joined the party due to technical issues as I am an independent MLA,” Mevani said.
Jignesh Mevani said that the country is passing through an unprecedented crisis under the present BJP government. “An atmosphere of hatred is being spread across the country,” Mevani said.

“Today I am ideologically part of the Congress, because it is an ideology that can save the country,” he said.
Mevani said, “I will fight the upcoming Gujarat elections with the Congress symbol.”
Venugopal praised Jignesh Mevani for running a zealous campaign against the BJP and its policies in Gujarat.
Mevani can play an important role for the Congress in Gujarat in the assembly elections to be held next year.
Mevani is the convener of the National Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM). In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress did not field its candidate against Mevani in the Vadgam constituency.
Her association with the Congress comes at a time when it is wooing the Scheduled Caste community by electing Charanjit Singh Channi, the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab.
There has been a flurry of resignations from the party in recent months after these two young leaders took to the Congress platform.
Former Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev quit the party to join the Trinamool Congress, former Union minister Jitin Prasada is now in the BJP and a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.
Veteran Goa Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro on Monday resigned from the party and is likely to join the Trinamool Congress.
