Kanpur to Kolkata: Cities changed several times

Over the years, many cities in India have been renamed by different state governments. There are also many cities whose names have been changed more than once. These cities had different names before independence, but after the end of British rule, their names were changed. Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Allahabad, Pune and Panaji are some of the big cities whose names have been changed in recent years.

Kanpur

The name of the city of Kanpur has been changed several times. According to historians, the first name of Kanpur was ‘Kanhpur’, which was founded by the Hindu king Chandel Singh. Apart from this, the name of Kanpur was also named ‘Khanpur’. After independence, the city was renamed Kanpur in 1948, since then its name has remained unchanged.

Thiruvananthapuram

The name of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, has also been changed several times. This city was known as Trivandrum from the time of the British. In 1991, the Government of Kerala decided to change the name of the city to Thiruvananthapuram.

Mumbai

Years ago, Mumbai was named after the presiding goddess of the city, Mumba Devi. It was known as Mumbai to the native Marathi and Gujarati residents of the city. However, its name was changed to Bombay during the British period, which is said to be derived from the Portuguese word bombam meaning ‘good bay’. However, in 1995 the name of the city was changed to Mumbai.

Panaji

The name of Panaji, the capital of Goa, has also been changed several times. The word Panaji means ‘the land that never floods’. The city was initially named Panjim by the Portuguese. A few years later, the name of the city was changed to Nova Goa or New Goa. But in 1961 the name of the city was changed to Panaji.

Chennai

Madras was renamed in 1996. The British changed the name of Madras from Madraspattinam to Madras. Even today there is a fishermen’s town of this name in Chennai. The city is said to have been named after the Telugu king Damarala Chenappa Naikoodu, while some claim that the name comes from the Chenna Keshava Perumal temple. However, Madras was renamed as Chennai in 1996.

Kolkata

Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, was always known as ‘Kolkata’ to native Bengalis. During the British rule, the name of the city was changed to Calcutta. However, in 2001 the name of the city was changed to Kolkata. The name Kolkata is said to be derived from the names of three villages that were merged to form the city. These villages were Sutanati, Govindpur and Kalikata.
