After a long gap of three years, the Kanwariyas have returned to the Pashupatinath temple. One of the Kanwariyas, Deepu Thakur along with three other friends took a dip in the Bagmati river on the hill of Sundrijal. He collected holy water, performed some rituals and then left barefoot for Pashupatinath temple. The Kanwariyas are a group of Hindu devotees of Lord Shiva, the savior of the universe, who set out on a pilgrimage every Monday in the month of Shravan. They flock to the nearby water resources to fetch holy water and walk barefoot to the Shiva temple and offer it. Sundrijal is one of the nearby water resource which contributes to the formation of Bagmati river flowing through Kathmandu as well as Pashupatinath temple which is a suitable place for Kanwariyas. According to religious belief, one’s wish is fulfilled and Lord Shiva will bestow luck on the devotees who visit temples dedicated to him and pay homage after taking an early morning bath on the first Monday of the month of Shravan.
