Karhal: 93rd SP stronghold who once switched to BJP in 2002; About all seats Akhilesh is contesting

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav will contest his first assembly election from Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal constituency, the party announced on Thursday. The assembly constituency is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party, and comes under the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency which is known as ‘Neta ji’ Mulayam Singh Yadav’s ground.

Akhilesh is the MP from Azamgarh seat. On Wednesday, he had said that he would decide to contest the elections after talking to the people of his constituency. Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma said, “The party president will contest from Karhal seat of Mainpuri.

Akhilesh had earlier said that he would not contest the elections, but seems to have changed his mind with this announcement. If reports are to be believed, he changed his mind recently after two members of the Yadav family were thrown out of the party and the BJP announced that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will contest from Gorakhpur.

Here’s what you need to know about the Karhal constituency from where Akhilesh will contest the upcoming elections:

1. Akhilesh will contest the assembly elections for the first time. The SP has chosen Karhal assembly constituency for him, as it comes under Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, in which his father Mulayam Singh Yadav is an MP.

2. In the third phase of UP assembly elections, the Karhal assembly seat will be contested on February 20, while the nomination for this seat is to start from January 25.

3. This seat is considered a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party. He has been with the SP since 1993 except for one exception. In the 2002 elections, this seat went to BJP’s account.

4. The caste dynamics in Karhal seat may be favorable for the SP as it has around 1.5 lakh voters from the Yadav community who are considered traditional SP voters. There are also 14,000 Muslim and 34,000 Shakya community voters in this seat.

5. The sitting MLA from Karhal is Sobran Singh Yadav, who was with the BJP when he won the seat in 2002. But since 2007 he is contesting from this seat on SP ticket.

Party sources said Akhilesh’s cousin Tej Pratap may be made in-charge of Karhal seat. Akhilesh finalized the seat after meeting district chief Devendra Yadav, MLC Arvind Yadav and Karhal MLA Sobran Singh Yadav at the SP headquarters in Lucknow.
