Kannada Okkuta, an umbrella group comprising of Pro-Kannada organisations, has called for a statewide Karnataka bandh today, September 29. After assessing the specifics of the bandh, Bengaluru DC Dayananda KA declared a holiday today for schools and colleges in the interests of students. In the Mandya district, where schools and colleges have been ordered to remain closed today as per directives from District Collector Kumar, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have also been imposed ahead of the Karnataka Bandh.

The Karnataka Bandh is being staged in the backdrop of the Cauvery dispute where protests are being carried out over the Karnataka government’s decision to release 5,000 cusecs of Cauvery water from state dams to Tamil Nadu. The bandh will take place from 6 am to 6 pm for a full twelve hours, according to the organisers, and will be observed across the state.

Today’s Karnataka bandh will be the third bandh to be held in Bengaluru city in a span of less than twenty days. The first was on September 11th, and it was organised by private transportation unions. The second was observed on September 26 by the Karnataka Water Conservation Committee with the backing of several groups.

Normal life is anticipated to be disrupted in Bengaluru city owing to the bandh, more so in the southern regions, as there will be a large demonstration from Town Hall to Freedom Park, with people from diverse walks of life expected to participate.
