Lokayukta officials today arrested the son of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh.

According to Lokayukta sources, Prashant Kumar, Chief Accounts Officer of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), was arrested from the office of the state-owned Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL), which manufactures the ‘brand’. Mysore Sandal Soap’.

Virupakshappa, MLA from Channagiri in Davangere district, is the president of KSDL.

Sources said at least three bags of cash were recovered from the KSDL office.

Mr Kumar, a 2008-batch Karnataka Administrative Service officer, was caught accepting bribe from a contractor to clinch a deal to buy raw material required for manufacturing soaps and other detergents.

He allegedly demanded Rs 81 lakh from the contractor, who had approached the Lokayukta a week ago. After this the trap was laid.

A senior Lokayukta official said, “The money was received on behalf of KSDL chairman Virupakshappa for the purchase of raw material. The trap was laid at 6.45 p.m. The KSDL chairman and the money recipients are the accused father and son.”
