Karnataka calls for imposing travel ban on those coming from countries hit by Omicron

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday urged the Center to impose travel restrictions on travelers arriving from South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana over concerns about the detection of a new variant of the Covid-19 ‘Omicron’.

Karnataka CM Bommai said, “A new strain of Kovid-19 has appeared abroad, mainly seen in South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana. European countries have imposed restrictions and the World Health Organization has also introduced this new strain.” An alarm has been raised against the variant. In light of these new developments, Bommai said, “We have also requested the central government to ban travelers from three countries (South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana).”

Bommai pointed out that little is known about the impact of the new version, and therefore, India is on alert. “India is on alert. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called a meeting and given several instructions. Keeping this in mind, we had also called a meeting in the state on Saturday. So far we have not come under new tension in the state,” Chief Minister said.

He mentioned that he has ordered airport restrictions for people arriving from countries who have been in contact with people from countries where the new Omicron variant has been detected. “Passengers will be allowed to leave only if they test negative for Covid-19 or they will be sent to the containment zone. Earlier, there was a system that passengers were allowed to leave after collecting samples and then released. Testing positive,” Bommai said.

Additionally, underlining that there was a high prevalence of Kovid among people coming from Kerala, the Chief Minister said that he has ordered precautionary measures in Dakshina Kannada, Madikeri, Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts bordering Kerala, which are round the clock. will be effective.

“People coming from Kerala will be allowed in people only after they test negative for COVID-19. They should have taken two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. That’s how we have given direction for round the clock surveillance in these districts, ” he explained. He also said that those who have come from Kerala in the last 14 days will have to get re-examined.

Meanwhile, speaking about rising cases in some clusters of Dharwad, Bengaluru and Mysore, he said that precautionary measures have been taken. “We are conducting tests at SDM Medical College. We are conducting tests on doctors, nurses, patients and others. We have stopped the admission of outpatients,” Bommai said. Dharwad.

Health department sources said on Sunday that 25 more Kovid infected people have been detected. Along with this, out of 3,973 people who got tested, 306 people have been found infected with Kovid. The infected are said to be asymptomatic or with mild symptoms.

Stating that the government is keeping a close watch on the developments, Bommai said that not only are more tests going on but also treatment of COVID infected people is being done. The Chief Minister also said that his government would seek permission to give booster doses to health workers. Simultaneously, the government will ensure that people working in malls, public places and government offices take a double dose of COVID-19, Bommai said, adding that the state also plans to arrange vaccination camps in malls and government hospitals. Is.

Asked about the ban on New Year celebrations, Bommai said no decision has been taken on it. However, the government will wait for a week to take a stand on the issue after seeing the developments related to COVID-19.

When asked about the restrictions during the MLC election campaign, the Chief Minister said that though the gathering would not be very large, he has given instructions on proper COVID practices such as wearing of masks and following social distancing. Regarding the Covid-19 vaccine stock, Bommai said that there are 80 lakh vaccines in the state.
