Deputy Commissioners of six districts participate in video-conference to discuss the damage caused during the recent rains

Following unprecedented rains in Karnataka in the past few days, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai directed the Deputy Commissioners to visit the rain-affected areas to ensure no lapse in relief distribution.

The north-east monsoon claimed 13 lives, and damaged 3,309 houses and standing crops on 6,279 hectares. The southwest monsoon had damaged crops in 9.90 lakh hectares.

During a video-conferencing with the deputy commissioners of Dharwad, Davangere, Belagavi, Vijayanagar, Gadag and Kalaburagi districts on October 13, Mr Bommai said he had received reports of lapses at some places while recording rain-related damages.

The memorandum seeking relief should be based on ground reality. Action should be taken against the employees who are negligent in duty. The Chief Minister said that the Commissioner of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) should issue a circular to provide additional relief in addition to the guidelines of NDRF for damage caused by rain.

He asked the Deputy Commissioners to visit the spot without any lapse and issue appropriate instructions to the Tehsildars for recording the damages related to rain as well as distribution of compensation.

Mr Bommai said the input subsidy should be distributed on a priority basis, and relief for the damages related to the rains that occurred in October 2021 should be distributed within this month immediately after the joint survey.

Infrastructure damage should be classified on the basis of the extent of damage.

“All preventive measures should be taken to check the breach of tanks. If the tanks are weak, care must be taken keeping in mind the water pressure and other subtle details,” he told the deputy commissioners.

Priority should be given to the construction of bridges. The Chief Minister said that power supply should be restored by repairing broken electric poles and transformers within 24 hours.

‘No paucity of funds for distribution of compensation for rain damage’

Mr Bommai said that preventive measures should be taken to prevent flash floods following unexpected rains in several districts of Karnataka. “There is no paucity of funds to distribute compensation for house and crop loss. However, in respect of damage to infrastructure, an action plan should be prepared to seek funds and start work accordingly,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that another meeting will be held after three days regarding the damage caused to the infrastructure.

Ministers Govind Karjol and Shashikala Annasaheb Jole, ministers in-charge of several districts and senior officials attended the meeting.
