Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah and other Congress MLAs protest against the installation of Veer Damodar Savarkar’s portrait in the assembly hall outside the Karnataka Assembly in Belagavi on Monday.

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar alleged that the BJP wanted to disrupt the assembly proceedings and that is why they had put up VD Savarkar’s photo in the assembly hall. Karnataka Congress chief DK said, “They want that our assembly should not function. They want to disrupt it. They have brought this photo because we are going to raise many issues of corruption against them. They have no development.” No agenda.” Shivakumar said. Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah also wrote to the Speaker to install portraits of Basavanna, Valmiki, Kanaka Das, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, BR Ambedkar and many others inside the Assembly.

Congress leaders were also carrying photographs of other freedom fighters indicating that those photographs should be hung in the assembly. The 10-day winter session beginning Monday at Suvarna Vidhan Soudha is likely to witness a tussle between the BJP and the Congress over the legacy of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

The government has kept six portraits of important personalities in the assembly hall, one of which is of Savarkar.
