Narayanappa told the Times of India that there were 17 passengers, including two children, in the jeep. The injured have been shifted to hospitals. One passenger escaped with minor injuries. The truck driver left his vehicle and fled.
Maluri MLA KY Nanje Gowda said that he was going from Srinivasapur to Chintamani and was in the back of the jeep at the time of the accident. He said the victims were traveling in private jeep due to lack of cheap and reliable public transport facility. Gowda said that most of the private operators are greedy and drive vehicles without proper permits, licenses and insurance cover.
