The Supreme Court of India on Thursday delivered a divided verdict in the Karnataka hijab ban case. The Supreme Court bench ordered that the matter be placed before the CJI to refer the dispute arising out of the Karnataka government’s February 5 circular to a three-judge bench. Justice Hemant Gupta, before pronouncing the verdict, said “there are different opinions” and endorsed the Karnataka government’s circular imposing uniforms and banning all religious attire, including the hijab. He dismissed the appeals. Justice Dhulia differed with Justice Gupta and said that the primary consideration for him was the education of Muslim girls.
