BENGALURU: Get ready to spend more money for dairy products, as milk producers start demanding increased demand.
The cost of one liter Nandini toned milk (blue sachet) is currently Rs 37. If the government agrees to the demand, the cost could go up to Rs 40. Simultaneously, the prices of other varieties and curd will also increase. “For the last two-and-a-half years, milk prices have not increased, even as the procurement and supply cost has seen a 30-40 per cent hike due to the steep rise in the prices of petrol and diesel. 14 Milk Unions The majority of the U.S. is running in losses. Therefore, the government should now allow an increase in the price of milk,” said Bengaluru Milk Union president Narasimhamurthy.
The general body meeting of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) held on Friday decided to appeal to the government to increase the price by Rs 3 per litre. KMF and other milk unions have been demanding revision of prices for the past six months, claiming that they are financially affected due to the fall in sales during the pandemic. The unions have reduced the purchase price of a liter of milk from Rs 30 to Rs 25.
Out of the increase of Rs 3, farmers will get Rs 2.5 and unions will get 50 paise. A delegation had met Bommai and Cooperation Minister ST Somashekar during the winter session in Belagavi last month. Sources said the government may accept the demand or allow a hike of Rs 1-2.
