Karnataka will get AIIMS, Center gives green signal to the state’s request

The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya gave green signal for setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Karnataka, which will help in boosting the health and medical education sector of Karnataka.

This decision was taken after a meeting between Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar and Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi on Wednesday. Sudhakar said, “I thank our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for assuring me of AIIMS for Karnataka. This will greatly benefit the state and further boost the health and medical education of the state.”

His office said in a statement that Karnataka had earlier requested the central government to start AIIMS in the state to augment public healthcare and medical education infrastructure.

In other decisions, it was also announced that the DPR for a new National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) Polytrauma Center and PG Institute has been submitted to the Standing Finance Committee (SFC). The new 538-bed institute is ready to come up in three years at the cost of 489 crores.

Once approved, the new institute will come up at Kyalasanahalli near Henoor Main Road in Bengaluru.

Sudhakar also demanded the central government to set up a separate state-level university for nursing and allied health sciences to ensure quality and professionalism, PPP model for administration of hospitals and a specialized course in hospital management and in-service To provide training to doctors.

The Minister also suggested giving priority to domicile students in deemed universities, extending the assistance of the Government of India to set up medical colleges in all districts, irrespective of whether it has a private medical college or not.

The letter to Mandaviya includes stringent norms to ensure world-class food security and standards and flexibility in leveraging the National Health Mission to address state-specific and region-specific health challenges.
