He claimed that the PMU had arranged for the facility of 5,000 devotees in a day. “Various Indian organizations want to come in batches of more than 500 devotees, but it seems that the Indian authorities are only allowing more than 200 devotees per day,” he said.
Inaugurated on November 9, 2019, the Kartarpur Corridor was temporarily closed on March 16, 2020 as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The newly constructed corridor enables Indian devotees to travel approximately 4.5 km inside Pakistan to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, where SikhThe first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev, spent about 18 years until his death.
On October 2, 2020, the Pakistani government announced the unilateral opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, but India refused to indicate. On November 17, 2021, India reopened its part of the Kartarpur Corridor for a one-day pilgrimage.
The CEO said that despite the economic impasse, the Pakistan government is spending a huge amount on the maintenance of the Kartarpur Corridor, for which it has specially created a separate department.
“We have over 1,000 dedicated personnel including security personnel, which cost us between Rs 5 to 6 crore in Pakistani rupees,” the CEO said.
