According to Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth falls on Wednesday, November 1 this year. The Chaturthi tithi begins on October 31 at 9:30 PM and ends on November 1 at 9:19 PM. Karwa Chauth fasting is observed during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik.

But according to the Amanta calendar, which is followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and southern India, it falls in Ashwin month. However, the only difference is in the name of the month, as this religious occasion is celebrated on the same day in all the states across India. Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi

  1. Goddess Parvati, along with Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, and Lord Kartikeya, are worshipped on this day.
  2. Married women fast for the entire day, and Karwa Chauth Puja is done in the evening.
  3. Before breaking the fast, the gods are worshipped, and the puja altar is prepared, especially with the Karwa Chauth Calendar.
  4. Women assemble to do Karwa Chauth puja and read the tale behind observing the ritual.
  5. Water is offered to Chandra Devta (Moon) in an earthen jug.
  6. To break the fast, women look at the moon, then at their husband’s face through a sieve.
  7. Following that, the husbands feed their wives, thereby breaking the fast.

Karwa Chauth 2023 Dos & Don’ts

  1. Married women can therefore apply henna or mehndi a day before the celebration, as it represents good fortune and a happy married life.
  2. Women should wear elements that are associated with married women, such as a mangal sutra, bindi, bangles, and so on.
  3. Married women should avoid wearing black or white on this day.
  4. When breaking the Karwa Chauth fast, avoid fried foods since they may upset your stomach.

Karva Chauth History

There are many legends and beliefs associated with the history of Karwa Chauth.

One of the most popular legends is the story of Queen Veeravati. Veeravati was a beautiful and devoted wife. On her first Karva Chauth, her seven brothers tricked her into breaking her fast by posing in a mirror as the moon. Soon after breaking the fast, Veeravati received the news of her husband’s death. She was devastated and wept bitterly. A goddess appeared to Veeravati and revealed the truth about her brothers’ trick. The goddess also blessed Veeravati, saying that her husband would be revived. Veeravati’s husband was revived, and they lived happily ever after.

Another legend associated with Karwa Chauth is the story of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Parvati once observed a fast to please Lord Shiva and obtain him as her husband. Her devotion and sacrifice were rewarded, and Lord Shiva married Parvati.

Karwa Chauth Significance

Karwa Chauth is a festival that celebrates the bond between husband and wife. It is a day for women to pray for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. On Karwa Chauth, married women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise. They do not eat or drink anything during this time. In the evening, women perform a puja ritual and break their fast after seeing the moon and offering it to their husbands.

Karwa Chauth Celebrations Across India

Karwa Chauth is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India. Women start preparing for the festival several days in advance. They buy new clothes and jewelry, and prepare special dishes to break their fast. On the day of the festival, women wake up early and take a bath. They then dress up in their new clothes and jewellery and start their fast.

In the evening, women gather together to perform the puja ritual. The puja is usually performed by a priest or by an elderly woman in the family. The women chant mantras and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. They also offer food and water to the moon.

After the puja ritual, women wait for the moon to rise. Once the moon rises, women offer it to their husbands and then break their fast. Husbands also give their wives gifts on Karwa Chauth.
