Botad (Gujarat) [India]July 26 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met people sick and their families after consuming spurious liquor in Botad district on Tuesday.

At least 28 people died in Gujarat’s Botad district after consuming chemical-laden liquor or spurious liquor.

“A very sad incident has come to my notice that in Bhavnagar more than 25 people have died due to drinking of spurious liquor and many others are admitted in hospitals. I wish him a speedy recovery,” said Delhi CM Kejriwal.

Delhi CM Kejriwal further questioned the Gujarat government that if the state is a dry state, then how is liquor being sold openly in the state and who is benefiting from it?

“Why is the state government not taking care of it or is there an internal conspiracy behind it?” They said.

He further claimed that Gujarat has liquor business worth thousands of crores.

After meeting the victims and their families, Kejriwal alleged that “this is not the first time that people of Gujarat have died due to spurious liquor”.

Delhi CM said, “People’s lives are at stake.”

Kejriwal met people and their families who fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar.

In Gujarat’s Botad district, the death toll due to consumption of chemical-laden liquor or spurious liquor has gone up to 28, while three FIRs have been registered in Barwala, Ranpur and Ahmedabad Rural, the officials told. More than a dozen were hospitalized due to the consumption of spurious liquor. A committee has been constituted to investigate the incident of chemical abuse in Botad, Banwala and Dhanduka taluks.

“A total of 28 people have died in the tragedy. The chemical was directly mixed with water and people consumed it, out of which 600 liters were sold for Rs 40,000,” said Ashish Bhatia, Director General of Police (DGP).

DGP Bhatia also informed that the local police will constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the matter.

“Three FIRs have been registered in Barwala, Ranpur and Ahmedabad Rural. The local police will constitute the SIT,” he said. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi took cognizance of the situation and chaired a meeting regarding the matter.

The incident came to light last night when several people were taken to hospital after consuming alcohol containing dangerous chemicals.
