Kerala High Court accepts plea seeking removal of Malayalam film ‘Churuli’ from OTT platform

According to the petitioner from Thrissur, the film is full of filthy and derogatory words which have hurt the modesty of women and children.

Observing orally that the dialogue in Malayalam film churuli The Kerala High Court on Thursday accepted a writ petition seeking a direction to immediately remove the film from the OTT platform.

Justice N. Nagresh made this comment after watching some video clippings of the film. The petition was filed by Peggy Fenn from Thrissur. According to him, the film was full of filthy and derogatory words, which outraged the dignity of women and children.

The film was accessible to everyone, including children and teenagers, as it was released on the OTT platform. The petitioner submitted that though the film was capable of instilling a sense of curiosity and mystery in the minds of the audience, it contained excess of hate speech.

He told that people often copy the dialogues of films and if they do so after watching churuli, it will affect “public morality and peace”. No person shall use such language even in his private conversation. The filmmakers deliberately used such language with the intention of attracting more attention to the film.

The counsel for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) submitted that the film available on OTT platform SonyLIV is not a certified version of the film.

The counsel submitted that in accordance with the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Cinematograph Certification Rules, 1983 and the guidelines issued by the Government of India, it was certified A (Adult) by the CBFC with suitable excises/modifications.
