Kerala Police Flags “Dangerous Trend” After Heavy Rains In New Advisory

With rains, floods and landslides killing at least 27 people in Kerala so far, the state police on Tuesday issued an advisory asking people not to jump into rivers to catch fish.

The state’s dams are filling up rapidly due to incessant rains. The shutters of the Idukki dam were opened at 11 am amid rising water level, news agency ANI reported. Two shutters of Idamalayar dam were opened at 6 am for 50-50 cm.

The shutters of Kaki Ananthodu Dam in Pathanamthitta district were opened on Monday. Moozhiar and Maniyar dams have also been opened. Shutters of Peechi, Chimmini, Poomla, Asurankundu, Pathazhakundu and Vajani dams have been opened in Thrissur district to prevent floods.

Chuliyar, Mangalam, Malampuzha, Kanjirapuzha and Shiruvani dams have been opened in Palakkad district. People living in and around the banks of these rivers have been advised to exercise caution and be alert to the rising waters. Some people living in low-lying areas have also been shifted to safer places as a precaution.

ANI reported that the rain-related incidents have claimed 14 lives in Kottayam district, 10 in Idukki district and one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode districts.

Around 10,000 people have been shifted to 247 relief camps across the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed that the relief camps should have adequate facilities.

Even as the state is likely to receive one more rain from tomorrow, India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed that the southern state received 135 per cent more rainfall during the period from October 1 to 19 .

Kerala has received more rains due to the low pressure areas that developed along the Lakshadweep coast in the southeast region of the Arabian Sea and southeast parts of the Bay of Bengal, the Met Office has issued an orange alert. Indications of heavy rain in 11 districts of Kerala on Wednesday.
