Kerala Police gathers information about attackers involved in political crimes

By one account, the investigation focused primarily on two organizations that subscribe to extreme radical views.

The exercise was reportedly the result of a top-level meeting chaired by state police chief Anil Kant and attended by TKVinod Kumar, additional director general of police, intelligence, among others.

The intelligence effort is believed to be focused on identifying hit teams of both organizations, studying their criminal past, monitoring their social media accounts, identifying their safe homes and vehicles, and tracking their mobile phone activity. The police was also demanding execution of pending warrants against the alleged miscreants.

They will also legally check whether the workers attract Kerala Anti-Social Activity Prevention (KAPA) provisions that make them eligible for preventive detention.

An official said such crimes were often coordinated through encrypted mobile phone messaging groups. Access to the groups was restricted according to the hierarchy. An official said that a strong legal system supported the accused. The organizations also provided for the families of those involved in political crimes. In the past, organizational leaders often negotiated the surrender of alleged suspects.

However, when the case came up for hearing, prosecutors were forced to think that the accused could provide strong excuse. It seemed that those who had nothing to do with the crime had committed the crime at the behest of their leaders to shield the real attackers.

Last week, Mr Kant had categorically said that the investigation into the Alappuzha murders would reach the doors of the leaders who sanctioned the crime.

The police had criticized the opposition for its alleged “failure” to predict and prevent inter-party violence in Alappuzha.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Saw a conspiracy to incite communal unrest in Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had assured strict action in the matter.
