Family sources said KR Vijayan, owner of a tea stall in Kochi, died of a heart attack here on Friday. He was 71 years old. Vijayan and his wife Mohana had a modest tea shop here, ‘Shri Balaji Coffee House’ and became famous after their earnings funded their world tours. The couple recently returned from a family tour of Russia. The two saved Rs 300 a day from their tea stall earnings and traveled to Israel in 2007, their first trip outside the country.

The couple had traveled to 26 countries in the last 14 years. The couple also took small loans for travel. As news of the couple traveling around the world went viral, they started getting sponsors like industrialist Anand Mahindra, who sponsored their trip to Australia in 2019 after learning about them from social media. His last visit to Russia was on 21 October and he returned on 28 October. His last visit before traveling to Russia was in November-December 2019, due to the lockdown induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My parippu vada, pajam porridge and provider of tea, at least twice a week, young-hearted friend, narrator of travel tales, the world-renowned tea-seller from Ernakulam, Vijayan, passed away. He had just returned from Russia, where his wish was to meet Putin,” tweeted noted author NS Madhavan.

Vijayan is survived by his wife, two daughters Sasikala, Usha and three grandchildren. The body will be cremated today evening.
