N Maria broke the national combined record by lifting a total of 231 kg at the National Weightlifting Championships in Bhubaneswar in March. With his superb lift and 101kg snatch, he won the gold medal for Mangalore University.

“I took part in Senior National before coming to KIUG 2021. After National, I was feeling a little down because I had a shoulder injury and I was not able to do much. I achieved this result today Wasn’t expecting myself to do it, but I’m very proud of my efforts,” Ann Maria said after her big win.

Ann, who began her sporting career in powerlifting, was persuaded by her mother to enter the field of weightlifting in order to lose weight. But soon, she started enjoying the sport and started training intensively to get better at it.

“I started training every day and worked hard. Weightlifting is what I fell in love with and there is no other sport or job that I would love to do.”

“My mother was a lifter in her peak times, but there was no support back then. I consider him and my father, who is a rickshaw puller, as my inspiration as he supports me in every way.”

For the past three years, Ann has been training at the SAI Center in Bangalore. Her coaches explain why she has been able to make a mark over the past year.

After breaking two national records in two months, N Maria’s coach Meenakshi Sundareswaran said, “He has a pretty good ratio between snatch and clean-and-jerk. This is prime time for them. By 25, it’s her peak time. She is 23 years old now. Her next championship is the Asian Games and then she will go on to participate in the senior championship.”

Coach Sundareswaran talks about his strategy at KIUG 2021 and explains why Ain missed out on surpassing her overall national record.

“She is more than capable of breaking it, but it was intentional. We had planned it so that she could win the gold medal, which we were sure she would do when she achieved the 101kg snatch lift.”

Putting clear faith in her student, coach Sundareswaran further added that soon, Ann will be ready to compete against top lifters from across the world. “It is possible that with a little pre-planning, Ann will be able to compete against her international rivals in her weight category and bring glory to the country. He is a very competitive athlete and big things will happen in his career.”
