Killed gangster’s sister-in-law files nomination from Congress for UP elections

The sister-in-law of slain gangster Amar Dubey on Tuesday filed her nomination papers as a Congress candidate for the upcoming UP elections from Kalyanpur assembly constituency. Congress candidate Neha Tiwari is the sister of Khushi Dubey, whose husband Amar Dubey was killed in an encounter with the UP Police.

Amar Dubey was an aide of gangster Vikas Dubey, who led the ambush that killed eight policemen in Kanpur’s Bikru village in July 2020. Vikas Dubey and Amar Dubey were killed in separate encounters.

The Congress had earlier announced that Khushi Dubey’s mother Gayatri Tiwari would contest from the Kalyanpur assembly seat, but later chose Neha Tiwari in her place. Gayatri had also reportedly refused to contest the assembly elections from Kalyanpur. Talking to the media, Neha said that the Congress has promised to stand by her, help her family and get bail for Khushi, who is in jail.

A Congress spokesperson in Lucknow alleged that Gayatri Tiwari’s name was removed from the voters’ list at the last minute even though she was casting her vote for the past several elections. He said that since her name was not included despite repeated efforts, the party decided to give ticket to Neha Tiwari.

Congress sources said that the opposition parties have raised their voice against Khushi Dubey without thinking that how a woman who had come to her in-laws’ house just two days ago could be involved in the crime committed by her husband. Khushi Dubey’s mother had met Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra a few days back.

Congress has decided to give 40 percent tickets to women in the UP elections.
