Thiruvananthapuram: 504 wild boars have been killed in the last one-and-a-half months alone, and indiscriminate killing of wild animals is not a solution to tackle human-animal conflict and crop damage, says Forest Minister AK saseendran said in the assembly on Thursday.

“Keeping in view the geographical features of the state, the government should prepare a comprehensive management plan. A dedicated division under the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) should handle the matter and formulate a special insurance scheme for those living near forest areas,” said Satisan.
Citing the example of another state, where chillies were grown on forest routes to prevent elephants from eating the crop, Satisan said such measures should also be explored.
Sashindran said the government would allocate more funds by next year to start activities to reduce human-wildlife conflicts. In 17 regions, the Forest and Wildlife Department is planning to come up with drone surveillance, so that farmers can be warned about the potential dangers in a timely manner. along with public awareness committee, out of which 246 have been made, are working well. They will be expanded to more areas, the minister said. Steps are being taken to ensure food and water for the animals inside the forest. He said that 723 ponds were being cleaned and rejuvenated, while 197 new ponds were being dug.
He said he has consulted with legislators from nine districts, where forests share borders with human settlements, and have received more than 1,600 suggestions. He said the forest department would prepare a draft report and submit the recommendations to the chief minister.
Earlier, taking up the matter of seeking permission for an adjournment motion, Sunny Joseph MLA He said that the incidents of attacks by animals on humans and crops are increasing in the districts having forest area.
