The month of Chaitra is an important month according to the Hindu calendar as many important festivals and fasts also come in this month. According to the Panchang, Chitra month is starting from March 19 this year. This tithi also marks the first day of Pratipada or Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight).

Chaitra Navratri and Ram Navami are two important festivals celebrated in this month.

Chaitra Navratri

Chaitra Navratri is a grand festival lasting nine days which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in northern India. This festival is celebrated with pomp in western and northern India. It is also known as Vasant Navratri.

Ram Navami

Ram Navami marks the birth of Lord Rama. In some parts of India, the festivities also begin nine days before Ram Navami. Devotees chant mantras and some people bathe a small idol of Lord Rama in water. There are many processions of the idols of Lord Rama, who shake smaller versions of him in the cradle etc.

Gudi Padwa (Marathi New Year)

The day begins with an oil bath followed by worship. The rituals mentioned in the scriptures on this day include oil bath and eating neem leaves. Chaitra Navratri Puja is started by North Indians on the same day. They eat neem with sugar candy on the first day of Chaitra Navratri Puja.
