“Know your limits”: High Court warns HD Deve Gowda party leader amid hearing

Mr Revanna has filed an affidavit in the court seeking permission to travel abroad.

Bangalore:

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday warned JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna to behave properly in court during the hearing in a matter related to his campaign for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat in 2019.

Mr Revanna, who is the only Lok Sabha member from Karnataka to represent his party, is facing a challenge to his election as Hasan MP in two election petitions that are being heard by the court.

On Wednesday, Mr Revanna was responding to questions put by the counsel for petitioner Keshav Reddy as a witness. His attempt to negotiate casually with the lawyer after his extended reply and questioning did not go down well with the court.

A single judge bench of Justice K Natarajan, which was hearing the case, had to warn him.

“Know your limits. You’re in a courtroom. Don’t speak like you make out,” the court cautioned him. The MP was then allowed to sit on a chair inside the witness box.

The petition has been filed by A Manju, the defeated candidate from Hassan parliamentary constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which Prajwal Revanna won. The petition alleges that Mr Revanna has not declared before the Election Commission all the expenses incurred by him in the elections.

On Wednesday, a question from him was regarding the participation of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda in his campaign and his arrival by helicopter for that.

Mr Revanna replied that since Deve Gowda was the star campaigner of the party, the election expenditure incurred by him is not added to the expenditure of the candidate.

Meanwhile, Mr Revanna has filed an affidavit in the court seeking permission to travel abroad for treatment of his back injury in an accident last year. He has said that he will be treated in London between 23 and 26 October and will return on 1 November.

The cross-examination hearing has been adjourned till November 4.
