Launched on March 28, 2008, during his tenure as Home Minister in the Left Front government, the Janmaitri Suraksha Project marked the beginning of the state police’s community policing initiative.

Although the project was launched in 2006, two years after the Left government came to power, Mr. Balakrishnan made it clear early on that the idea of ​​a people-friendly police force was top of his priorities as Home Minister. .

In his first interaction with the media after taking over as home minister in 2006, Mr Balakrishnan had clarified that the government would not allow “third degree methods” in police stations. He then said that a wide gap exists between the police and the public, whereas police officers should treat the public well when they approach police stations to lodge complaints. The Janmaitri project was able to change this by deploying trained men and women beat officers to interact with citizens.
