Kolkata: Two people were killed when a house and a generator room collapsed in two parts of south Kolkata on Friday.

An official of the KMC building department said, “We have started demolishing the unsafe parts of the building. We have also asked the husband of the deceased to move to a safer place.” However, a civic body source conceded that the building was not listed as “vulnerable” by them.
The second incident took place less than an hour before Lake View Road near Ravindra Sarobar. Jagannath Roy (52), a labourer, was working in the generator room at around 11.40 am when his 8-feet wall collapsed on him.
The generator room was located next to the four-storey building. The disaster management team reached the spot in 25 minutes. “It took us over 45 minutes to rescue the victim,” said a DMG official. He was taken to SSKM Hospital with serious injuries. He was later pronounced dead in the emergency unit. A team from the KMC building department visited the spot and took measures to secure the structure.
