West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) registered a massive victory in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Tuesday and retained power. In the municipal elections, TMC won 134 out of 144 wards. Out of 144 wards, 3 went to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 2 each to the Congress and the Left Front, while 3 wards went to independent candidates.
Figures show that the Left Front has emerged as the dominant opposition in the Kolkata civic polls, leaving the BJP behind. The Left Front secured the second position in nearly two-thirds of the 144 wards of the KMC.
Voting took place on 19 December at 4,959 polling stations in Kolkata amid tight security and adherence to the COVID-19 protocol. In the results announced today, it was revealed that TMC got 71.95 percent, Left 11 percent, BJP 8.94 percent, Congress 4.47 percent and Independent candidates got 3.64 percent. The Left Front ranks second in at least 65 wards out of a total of 144, the BJP in about 50 wards, followed by the Congress in 15 wards.
The officials started the counting of votes for the KMC elections at 8 am today. TMC is in power in KMC since 2010. In the last KMC elections held in 2015, the TMC had won 124 seats, while the Left Front had 13. The BJP and the Congress had won five and two seats, respectively.
The reactions of the leaders of West Bengal are coming since the KMC result is official.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took a dig at the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal for “creating an atmosphere of fear”.

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee described the party’s victory in the municipal elections as a “historic victory”.

Opposition parties in the state, including the BJP, Left Front and Congress, have called the KMC election a “tamasha”. He has complained that there was large-scale violence during the polling. The BJP has also moved the court seeking re-polling of the KMC elections.
