Kurup Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan brings his A-game to this period crime drama

The swag and messy scenes never go down in South Indian films. And Malayalam movies are no different. Mammootty and Mohanlal have always ruled the big screen with their big screen and powerful roles, but the new age regional films are undoubtedly turning heads with their story-driven approach. From Fahadh Faasil’s wave of unconventional films to Tovino Thomas’ family dramas, modern Malayalam films are a mix of swag, story, mass and make for a total storytelling experience. Like his father Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan is also known for his acting skills, choice of films and undoubtedly mass appeal.

In his latest outing Kurup, Salman portrays a conman named, one of Kerala’s most wanted. Apart from the gripping storyline of the film, the background score and almost perfect casting make it a complete package. Reportedly, Kurup was charged with murders and pretending to be his own death, among other crimes in real life. His actions led to a nationwide search operation, and it is still an unsolved mystery.

The film lives up to its title and mainly revolves around the title character of Salman. Directed by Srinath Rajendran, the film has enough visuals for fans of the actor to enjoy his swag, style and whistle-worthy dialogue delivery. Produced by Salman’s Wayfarer Films, the actor has managed to impress in more ways than one throughout the film.

The film is set against the backdrop of the 70s and 80s and sets the perfect tone for the film. Bombay Bazaar, the car and the film’s poster, is to the point among the background elements used in the film. Apart from Salman’s performance, Indrajit Sukumaran plays an important role as the Investigating Officer. Shobhita Dhulipala, Shine Tom Chacko and Shivajith also play pivotal roles in the film and work in perfect vocals.

There is an unusual twist in Kurup’s climax that makes the film even more interesting and gives the audience a much-needed finale. Even though the runtime of 2 hours-40 minutes, is undoubtedly a fascinating experience for the cine lovers. For all the fans of Dulquer Salmaan, Kurup is another film that they can be proud of. In the end, Kurup remains an unsolved mystery.
