A large number of villagers came out in the fair and cleaned the village by collecting polythene and plastic with the help of local self-help groups.

Ladakh’s Karith village decided to celebrate the holy Islamic festival of Eid-al-Fitr by cleaning its premises and surrounding areas. Many local women were seen participating and ensuring cleanliness of the area.

Villagers turned out in large numbers to celebrate the festival and cleaned the village by collecting polythene and plastic with the help of local self-help groups. The pictures of the local people cleaning their village were heartwarming as Ladakh is an ecologically sensitive region.

Villagers told CNN News18 that a greener India can be achieved with such steps and the aim now will be to make more people in the Union Territory aware of the benefits of keeping their surroundings clean.

A local villager said, “All the local people wanted to convey the message that cleanliness is essential for the survival of mankind and this was our goal.”

He said that he found it a better way to celebrate Eid by cleaning the village. The local people also raised slogans of ‘Clean Karith Village’ while passing through the streets of the village. The echo of this program named ‘Swachh Karith’ is now being heard in the nearby villages as well.

The village has already set an example. Karith village of Ladakh has taken several initiatives in the past, which became a learning point for many other villages. The same ideas were later replicated in many villages across the country.

Mohd Hassan of Yuva Karith group told CNNNews18 that the village has taken several initiatives which can become role models for others. “A healthy village is important for people in such remote areas and we want to convey the message to people in other villages of the country,” Hasan said.

The young Karith group also established a popular pilot school in Ladakh which became a Union Territory.
