Lata Mangeshkar’s unheard song with Vishal Bhardwaj-Gulzar released tomorrow

film producer composer Vishal Bhardwaj And veteran lyricist Gulzar has announced that a song recorded by the duo with legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar more than two decades ago will be launched on Tuesday. The track, “Don’t Feel Well”, was recorded for a film 26 years ago, which was eventually shelved. The song will now be released on Mangeshkar’s 92nd birthday in association with Bhardwaj’s label VB Music and short video app platform Moj.

An acclaimed filmmaker behind films like “Maqbool”, “Omkara” and “Kaminey”, Bhardwaj got his major Bollywood break as a music composer in 1996 with Gulzar’s political thriller “Maachis”.

The soundtrack of “Maachis” marked the beginning of his long association with the veteran lyricist, who has collaborated on nine films including “7 Khoon Maaf” and “Pataakha”. “Maachis” also marked the first time he collaborated with Mangeshkar, who lent his voice to five songs, including the memorably sad “Pani Pani Re”.

During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bhardwaj said that he had recorded the song “Okay Nahi Lagta” with Mangeshkar even before “Maachis”. It was for another film that never saw the light of day.

“During that time, we recorded this song as well. Unfortunately the film for which we had composed the song was shelved. The song was lost along with it. For a long time, we thought that the film will be revived but after 10 years, it was clear that the film would not be made,” the filmmaker told reporters.

Bhardwaj said that the tape on which Mangeshkar’s song was recorded was lost and the recording studio was also closed. But about two years ago, Bharadwaj got a call from another recording studio where “somehow this tape landed” with his name on it.

“When we checked, it had this song in it. Lata ji’s voice was on another track. So we retrieved it and rearranged the song as it sounded a bit old… the song’s lost and then It was important to be found,” said the 56-year-old director.

In an audio message, Mangeshkar lauded the talent and determination of both Gulzar and Bhardwaj to discover the song.

“Vishal Bhardwaj, at that time, was a new composer. But the songs he composed were exceptional. In ‘Maachis’, I recorded two songs ‘Ae Hawa’ and ‘Pani Pani Re’. While the latter remained, the former did ‘ Didn’t cut because there was no position.

“Later, we collaborated again for this song, but the film never got made. After many years, they are releasing the song and I hope the listeners will like the song, this is the song,” said Melody Queen said. Calling Bhardwaj the “Columbus who discovered the song”, Gulzar said the track is relevant even after 30 years as it talks about the dynamics of a relationship.

“The boy and girl relationship in the movie was unbreakable. It’s often found in today’s generation, where you’re not sure about how far to go. In that situation, you think, ‘All right, but ‘Something doesn’t seem right (everything is fine, but some is not right)’.

He said, “The lines are more relevant. Somewhere Vishal observes the society, the environment, the people he lives with. He is aware of everything that happens socially, politically.”

Bhardwaj has also directed the music video of the song, which features 12 Moj producers Pankaj Joshi, Divya Upadhyay, Apoorva Arora, Chetan Sharma, Karan Panjwani, Khushi Maheshwari, Mansi Chaurasia, Priyanka Sharma, Rishabh Saini, Ruthvi Dev, Sunny Kalra and others. Will be Surbhi Sikh.
