Latakia: Israeli strike in Syria port targeted Iran’s weapons: Monitor – Times of India

Beirut: An Israeli airstrike hit a consignment of Iranian weapons in a Syrian port Latakia On Tuesday, in the first such attack on the major facility, a war monitor said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Israeli raid “directly targeted an Iranian arms shipment at the container yard.”
Syrian state media reported the attack on the container yard at Latakia port, without specifying what was targeted.
Observatory, a UK-based organization with an extensive network of sources on the ground SyriaSaid that the raid resulted in several explosions.
It reported “heavy material damage”, but said there were no immediate reports of casualties.
According to the Syrian state news agency sana, the strike took place at 1:23 am (2323 GMT Monday).
“Our air defenses thwarted the Israeli offensive in Latakia,” it said, adding that several containers were set on fire in the attack.
Latakia is the northernmost of Syria’s main ports, and lies approximately 230 kilometers (140 mi) north of Damascus.
Photos and footage published by Sanaa showed the fire in the yard, but state television later said firefighters had brought the fire under control.
Israel rarely comments on air strikes carried out in Syria but says repeatedly that it will not allow its arch enemy Iran To spread its feet in Syria.
Since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory, targeting government positions as well as Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, on November 24, five people were killed in Israeli missile strikes west of Homs province.
In two separate Israeli attacks in October, five pro-Iranian fighters were killed near the Syrian capital Damascus, while nine pro-government fighters were killed near the T4 airbase east of Palmyra in central Syria, the Observatory said.
Iran has been a key supporter of the Syrian government in the decades-long conflict.
It finances, arms and orders a number of Syrian and foreign militia groups fighting alongside the regular armed forces, chief among them the powerful Hezbollah group in Lebanon.
