Laver Cup 2021: Teams, full schedule and everything you need to know

The fourth edition of the Laver Cup begins on Friday, 24 September. Named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the mega tennis extravaganza will be played at Boston’s TD Garden from September 24 to 26. The annual competition in men’s tennis, in which teams representing Europe and the rest of the world play each other, has attracted packed venues in Geneva, Prague and Chicago in all previous editions.

In this year’s edition, Team World will be led by American legend John McEnroe, while the European team will be captained by Swedish great Bjorn Borg. Team Europe is undefeated in the event so far and will be eyeing another title, while the McEnroe-led Team World will look to win over their rivals this time. The tournament, organized by TEAM8, the management firm of Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer, was canceled last year due to the pandemic.

On paper, the European team has the advantage as they have at least six of the world’s top-10 players including US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Alexander Zverev. Notably, Team Europe will compete in the Big Three – in the absence of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However, Federer will cheer for his European teammates from the sidelines. The Swiss legend continues to recover from a knee injury that has kept him off the circuit for most of the season.

Meanwhile, Team World may not have a top-10 player, but Australians Nick Kyrgios along with Americans Reilly Opelka and John Isner will be part of the six-man squad.

The premier tennis event will be held in a Ryder Cup-style format, featuring players from both teams in singles and doubles matches, played in a best of three sets. The tournament will also feature ad hoc scoring, meaning that if the match consists of one set, the third and final set will be a 10-point tiebreak from the first.

here are the details:

Team World: John McEnroe (C), Patrick McEnroe (VC), Felix Auger-Aliasim, Denis Shapovalov, Diego Schwartzman, John Isner, Nick Kyrgios and Reilly Opelka.
