Sri Lanka’s Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, wrote an open letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, saying he was ready to take over as Prime Minister.

Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balvegaya-led opposition is ready to form a new interim government, subject to four conditions.

four conditions

Premadasa said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa would have to resign within a stipulated time period to accept the invitation. He put these four conditions:

  • President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must resign within a certain time period.
  • The post of Executive Chairman should be abolished.
  • The 19th Amendment to the Constitution should be implemented within two weeks.
  • The new government will be appointed in parliamentary elections after the constitutional reforms are implemented.

He claimed that the President should call for parliamentary elections to give the people an opportunity to choose a new stable government and establish the rule of law.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in his late night address that he would appoint a new prime minister and a youth cabinet this week that would introduce constitutional reforms.

The statement comes amid ongoing protests over the country’s worst economic crisis, which saw the removal of his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is under security at a naval base in the wake of violent attacks on his allies.
