Leeds United snatch last-gas 3-2 win over 10-man Wolves in thriller

Leeds United gave their Premier League hopes of survival a big boost on Friday after a goal from Luke Ayling came from behind to seal a thrilling 3-2 win over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves dominated in the first half and took a 2–0 lead after goals from Johnny Otto and Trincao, with Leeds losing key striker Patrick Bamford early to injury.

However, the match turned on its head after Wolves’ Mexican forward Raul Jimenez was sent off eight minutes into the second half to earn a second yellow card for hitting Leeds goalkeeper Ilan Meslier, who was injured.

Leeds counted the numerical advantage, scoring two goals in the space of four minutes from Jack Harrison and Rodrigo, who pulled level on the away side.

The play was not over, as Ayling came in time to celebrate the winner with the Leeds players and supporters in stoppage.

The visitors pressed on late and pulled off a crucial victory to clear seven points from the relegation zone, though played more games than all the teams below them. Wolves are eighth with 46 points after the loss.

Leeds had secured a stoppage-time home win over Norwich City in their previous match, but a win at Molineux was a world away after their low first-half performance.

However, after Jimenez’s second dismissal of the season, Leeds struggled to score points. It was the first time they had overcome two or more goals at halftime to win a Premier League game.

Leeds coach Jesse Marsh told Sky Sports: “I was focusing at halftime to help the group with some tactical changes, then it was about making sure our minds were straight and we were going to do that.” Were prepared for what is necessary for this.”

“The red card obviously helped a lot, but we still had to stick together and push,” said the American who took over from the sacked Marcelo Bielsa at the end of last month.

“It’s been an intense year for the group. I’m new to this so for me it’s about helping them understand how to deal with what’s happened and then how to look ahead and be better.”

Wolves coach Bruno Lage was not happy with the decision to oust Jimenez, feeling the second yellow card was harsh.

“Everyone saw what had happened and now they have a chance to see it on TV,” Lage told the BBC. “It’s a physical contact, Raul tries to win the ball. Wrong decision – and he (referee Kevin Friend) continues his opinion. A good decision.”

“At 45 minutes I think we were the better team. We were a much better team than our opponents. I am very proud of my players.”
